People think that, because we're writers, we can come up with
words for just about anything at the drop of the proverbial hat.
While that is mostly true, you have arrived at the portion of this
website which was hardest for me to create.
Like most writers, I find it most difficult to string together a few
words when asked to describe myself. But, here it goes.
I'm a writer and editor with extensive knowledge and experience
in the publishing industry. I am familiar with the various facets of
newsgathering and I have worked in most corners of a newsroom.
In my 20 years in the newspaper and publishing industry, I have
written countless news, sports and entertainment stories, reports
and features. I have even written about the weather a couple of times. I have also put in my share of time editing news stories.
That’s my writing and editing background.
Being in the newspaper industry also means I have dabbled in other facets of the business, such as page design and working with graphics. On the graphics side of this business, I always make sure people know I consider myself a “designer”, not an “artist”. I have the utmost respect for artists and I wish my putting a pencil to paper would bring about more than a stickman or two. I do think I have an artistic eye, however, and
that helps me take various art elements, images and fonts and create graphically-appealing designs.
My second career began when I created my own company, in 2001. Duarte Communications allows me to continue to write, edit and work with graphics, while also allowing me get involved in some of the other things I enjoy, organizing and staging entertainment events. My introduction to this field came about while working for a publicity and promotions company a number of years ago when I had the opportunity to work on events like the People’s Comedy Festival in Toronto.
